Salou is situated on the Costa Daurada (Dorada) in the Catalonia region of Spain and is approximately one hours drive from Barcelona. Salou really is a family resort with beautiful golden safe sandy beaches, many with blue flag awards. The beaches slope gently into the sea making safe bathing, coupled with the Mediterranean weather, it is not hard to see why the area is known as the 'Golden Coast'.
The palm tree lined promenade (Passeig Jaume I) offers wide paved area's along side the main beach (Llevant). Various children play facilities are located at various spots all along the fornt, and on the beach itself. Refreshments facilities selling soft drinks, beers and snacks are are also situated all along the beach as well as the usual sun bed and pedalo hire.

Salou boast many cafes, restaurants and bars to cater for all tastes. The majority are very child friendly and make you welcome.
Salou centre has good shopping facilities with gift shops, some nice boutiques and an abundance of sports shops offering every football shirt you could imagine, remember you get what you pay for and quality varies greatly with price.
The main bus station can be found along Passeig Jaume I with bus stops all along the main road. The buses between La Pineda, Salou and Cambrils are frequent and cheap and make the journey effortless. There is also a tourist road train that runs along the length of Salou and up to the PortAventura theme park. At the far end of Salou is the marina, another pleasant area where you can take a trip on the glass bottom boat to Cambrils. (other trips are available). Nearby to the marina can also be found the main Salou train station, with frequent trains to Barcelona and Tarragona.
Around Salou can be found the usual mini and crazy golf, a hard court basketball / football pitch next to the promenade (where there is always someone up for a kick-around) and the Salou park, which appears to be an evening gavering place, with several amusements for young children, an ideal place to tire them out at the end of the day.
What to do in Salou - The biggest attraction in the area has to be the PortAventura theme park, it is well worth the money and provides an excellent day out for all the familiy, so much so you WILL want to return. Barcelona is also worth a visit and can be easily reached by train of by Plana Buses which run direct from Salou.
When to visit Salou - The months of July and August can see Salou as a very busy resort, outisde of these months give the resort a more relaxing atmosphere with plenty of room to move around and enjoy Salou itself. The holiday season in Salou starts late March till Late October, although Salou may be very quiet out of season it is still an ideal place to visit at any time of the year with the climate holding up well in the winter months.
The weekends in Salou see many Spanish nationals descend on the resort both in and out of season, and like most things if it is good for the locals then it must be good.
