The Ebro Delta
The Ebro Delta (Delta de L'Ebre) is one of the largest wetland areas in the Mediterranean region, and provides habitat for over 300 species of birds. A large area of the Ebro Delta was designated as a Natural Park in 1986.
The Ebro Delta area of Catalonia is 190km south west of Barcelona at the mouth of Spain’s river Ebro. Various habitats including marshes, beaches, dunes, rivers and man made canals make up the Ebro Delta, which although used in majority for agriculture such as rice fields there is also an increasing popularity for tourist visits for the wildlife and fishing.
Among the 300 species of birds that can be found in the Ebro Delta are Gulls, Terns, Reed Warblers and breeding colonies of great Flamingo.
Ebro Delta birdwatching trips can be organised through www.ebrotours.co.uk who also provide rural accommodation and birdwatching/walking trips in the nearby mountains of Els Ports Natural Park.
The River Ebro offers some of the best fishing in Europe particularly for the large carp and extra large catfish.
A visit to the Ebro Delta offers peace and tranquillity in this beautiful national park, whether bird watching, fishing and just walking in this fabulous scenic area.
